About the Procedure
Lower blepharoplasty is recommended for patients with under-eye bags, dark circles, loose skin, or a tired appearance around the eyes. During the consultation, the lower eyelids and surrounding structures are carefully evaluated to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or short general anesthesia and typically takes about 45 minutes. Through a small incision inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach) or just beneath the eyelashes when excess skin is present, excess fat is removed or repositioned to fill hollow areas while preserving natural eyelid support. If needed, loose skin is gently tightened, and additional procedures such as canthopexy may be performed to improve eyelid support and eye shape.
Recovery & Possible Complications
Patients are usually observed overnight or discharged the same day, depending on the procedure performed. Cold compresses are recommended during the first few days to reduce swelling and bruising, and sutures are generally removed after 3–7 days.
Most patients can resume light daily activities within a week, while strenuous exercise should be avoided for approximately two weeks. Swelling and bruising vary between individuals and may take 2–3 weeks to fully resolve.
Possible complications are uncommon but may include temporary swelling (chemosis), bruising, dry eyes, or eyelid malposition.
