Suture Otoplasty (Ear Pinning Surgery) is a specialized procedure used to correct prominent ears by reshaping the ear cartilage with permanent sutures rather than cutting the cartilage. This technique preserves the natural anatomy of the ear while creating a balanced, natural-looking position without excessive pinning.
About the Procedure
Prominent ears may result from an underdeveloped antihelical fold, enlarged conchal cartilage, a prominent earlobe, or a combination of these factors. During the consultation, the ears are carefully examined to determine the underlying cause and the most appropriate treatment approach.
Suture otoplasty is suitable for both children and adults, although surgery is generally recommended from the age of 7 years, once ear growth is nearly complete and the child is mature enough to understand the procedure.
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia for teenagers and adults, or general anesthesia for children, and typically takes about 60 minutes. A small incision is made behind the ear, and permanent transparent sutures are used to reshape the cartilage while preserving its natural structure. The incision is then closed with absorbable sutures.
Recovery & Possible Complications
Suture otoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. Mild discomfort is usually well controlled with medication, and no suture removal is required.
The dressing is changed the following day, and patients are advised to wear a protective headband at night for approximately 6 weeks to prevent the ears from folding during sleep.
Complications are uncommon but may include infection, prominent sutures beneath the skin, minor asymmetry, or recurrence due to suture loosening. If revision is needed, it is generally recommended to wait about four months before performing corrective surgery.
