In some women, and less commonly in men, the white portion of the upper lip (the area between the upper lip and the base of the nose) tends to lengthen with age. This change affects facial proportions, making the lips appear thinner and less defined. An Upper Lip Lift, also known as a Bullhorn Lip Lift, shortens this distance to restore a more youthful and balanced appearance.
About the Procedure
Patients usually choose this procedure because their lips appear increasingly thin or tight, or because the upper lip covers the upper teeth. During the consultation, the upper lip and overall facial proportions are carefully assessed, and measurements are taken to determine the ideal amount of correction.
The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia or light sedation. A small strip of skin, usually 6–10 mm, is removed beneath the nostrils through a bullhorn-shaped incision. The scar is discreetly hidden at the base of the nose, and non-absorbable sutures are used to achieve a finer scar.
Recovery & Possible Complications
Patients return home the same day, and the sutures are removed after 5 days. The scar may remain slightly red for 1–2 months, but it can usually be concealed with makeup before gradually fading and becoming barely noticeable.
Complications are uncommon but may include minor bleeding, infection, or a visible scar if healing is not optimal. Patients are advised to stop smoking at least one month before surgery and avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications for ten days before the procedure to promote proper healing.
